Have all this extra cash left over after Christmas, and need to buy some new mma gear? Well what are you waiting for? Here is my guide to the best gear in the last year part 1.

Here it is almost the end of 2010 and I know what you are thinking. I have all this extra cash left over after Christmas and I need to buy some new mma gear. Well what are you waiting for? There is tons of great gear out there and I am going to take you through what I think is some of the best of the year. Whether you are thinking shorts or gloves, mouthguard or gi, or ever just a new hoodie I got you covered. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy a look at what I think are the best of 2010, and with 2011 coming up I can not wait to see what is just around the corner.

I think the best way to do this is I am going to present this in portions… first up shorts.

SHORTS

Every one of us that is a hardcore gear addict knows this is the staple of our addiction. You can never have too many pairs of mma shorts. I know that I can’t, and just continue to get them no matter how many pairs that I have. As new stuff comes out, I must have to have it. These are just a couple examples of the shorts that I have reviewed that I think are ones that you should not live without.

Sprawl Fusion-S Shorts

These are really some of the best shorts out on the market. With almost every key feature combined into one short this is surely not a pair that you will want to pass up.

Looking for a mouthguard, but can't afford a custom one. Take a look at the Jawzz Boil and Bites.

Per Manufacturer- These boil and bites are as close as you can get to a custom fit and designed Jawzz Custom Mouthguard. Each guard is made with PolyShoK technology!! Which is the same material used to create our custom mouthguards. When boiled right, you will get a tight fit. Even better, they are only $29.99.

First Impression- I liked that these boil and bites feel quite a bit thicker than other ones that I have tried in the past. Process looked straight forward so I could not wait to try them out. These are available in not only adult size but youth size as well.

Process- If you have ever used a boil and bite mouthguard then you will have no problem with this mouthguard. The name of it are basically the instructions. You boil, then bite to make it form to your teeth. They have many different popular design to choose from. Everything for an American Flag to various types of teeth. They do come with instructions with how long you keep them in the boiling water, and also what to do once you put it in your mouth, but like I said fairly straightforward.

Fit and Usage- While these mouthguards are not the same as their custom ones I was curious to see the fit of them. Well for a boil and bite they have a excellent fit. The fit is tight and has a custom feel to it just because the mouthguard itself is so thick. The mouthguard goes higher up on the gums than other boil and bites, but not quite as high as a custom fit. I used this during both muay thai and Jiu Jitsu. It kept a tight fit in my mouth and did not become irritation or uncomfortable. I could open my mouth and breath when I needed to and it did not interfere with breathing. I did take a couple shots to the mouth just to see how well my mouth and teeth would be protected and while the guard did move a little, it is one of the better boil and bite type guards.

Overall- This is definitely a mouthguard that I can recommend. For someone that is perhaps just getting into mma or someone looking for a more stylish mouthguard, but does not want to shell out all the cash for a custom one. Either way if you are looking for a new mouthguard be sure and take a look at Jawzz Boil and Bites, they may be just the mouthguard that you are looking for.

Look at the new Jaco Guardian Dual Tray Mouthguard. Is it worth putting in your mouth? Read my full review and find out.

Per Manufacturer-

Used by top MMA athletes worldwide, the patented technology utilized by the Guardian Dual Tray Mouthguard significantly reduces the risk of concussion/brain trauma while protecting both upper and lower teeth.

Patented dual tray design provides superior jaw stability and reduces the force of impacts to the jaw joint and base of brain by 40%, lowering the risk of concussion and protecting upper and lower teeth

Internal shock absorbers disperse impact to protect upper and lower teeth and further reduce the risk of concussion

Active airways allow you to breathe and speak freely while your jaw is closed and protected

Dual density thermoplastic construction provides a perfect personalized fit even with braces

Simple boil and bite forming process

Includes anti-microbial carrying case

First Impression- I have used a dual mouthguard in the past and did not really like it so we will see how this one compares. Comes with good instructions and a case.

Process- The instructions that this mouthguard come with are actually very good. They walk you through every step. Now I am not going to go into extreme detail, but will go over the basics. It is a dual tray boil and bite style mouthguard. One of the things that you want to pay attention to is if you need to trim some of the back of the mouthguard off. Now if you have read some of my other mouthguard reviews you know that I have a smaller mouth, and so I did need to trim the back off the mouthguard. Once you get the initial fit right, you have to get ready to boil it. Now there is a boiling technique with this mouthguard, but I wont get to far into it, you will just have to read the instructions.

Fit- Once I got done actually making the mouthguard I tried it out for fit. Now for a boil and bite style mouthguard this actually has a pretty good fit to it. It took me a little while to get use to the dual tray design, but once I did it did not bother me much. This mouthguard does not fit as tight as a custom style one and you can not talk with it in, but it does protect both the top and bottom teeth which most custom mouthguards do not. I also liked that it had a hole in the middle that you could breath through which allowed me to keep my jaw closed and more protected, and because this is a boil and bite style if you mess up making it you can just re-boil and try again.

Pros-

*Dual tray design

*Good fit for boil and bite

Cons-

*Dual tray design

*Can not talk while in

Overall- Yes I know that I put dual tray design in both pros and cons and that’s exactly to me how it is. There are both good and bad things that come along with this type of mouthguard. While it does provide protection for the bottom teeth and make it so the jaw does not move as much on impact, it is not as comfortable or as tight as custom fit mouthguard. Perhaps it is a little unfair to compare the two as this one cost less than half of some of those. Basically it comes down to personal preference. Will I wear this mouthguard again? The simple answer is yes. Do I recommend this mouthguard? Once again the answer is yes. The Jaco Guardian Dual Tray Mouthguard can be purchased for right around $30.

Process- The process on this mouthguard is the same as most mouthguards. You will receive a kit in the mail to make your impression if you choose to go this route. You can have a dentist do it if there is one in your area, either one that is a BAMF dentist or your own. Since I have done kits before I chose to get the impression kit and do it myself. Here is what comes in the kit

One thing I really liked about this kit is the three different size trays. I have a mouth that is on the smaller size and some kits that I have used the tray is just too big and some what uncomfortable. The directions that it comes with are very clear on how to create your impression, but I have done enough mouthguards before that it is pretty straight forward. This kit also comes with a box that not only is self addressed, but has the postage paid. During this entire time I kept in contact with BAMF and they responded to all of my emails promptly. We went over some design ideas and I finally settled on one. I took the impression and if you take it correctly it should end up looking like this.

I then simply filled out the paper work and put everything in the box to send back to them. Now I did not opt to do a rush job (Which costs and extra $35) so mine took about 2-3 weeks, but if you order a rush they can get your guard done in under one week. Now on to the finished product.

The Guard- I got the box and opened it up to find a nice case and my guard sitting inside. My first thought was, “Wow this thing is huge.” This is by far the thickest mouthguard I have ever seen. I got the super heavy weight model which is 7mm thick. Now keep in mind that they provide the only $15,000 dental warranty and I can see why. I was a little worried I would not even be able to get it into my mouth. Well the good news is that I could. The fit of this guard is nice and tight. The key with this one is to make sure that you do the impression kit right because I do not see this one being easily adjusted*. However if for some reason it did not fit you can speak to one of their dentists that make the guards, and they can help you. You also have the option to return it and they will make you a new guard no problem as they do have a guarantee that the guard will fit. Now as for the design. It was exactly what I had asked for. I will say that I could see the paper that they had used to do the design, but that is pretty normal for a mouthguard so you can’t mark them too far down for that. The yellow however on the paper design in the guard did match the actual yellow of the guard which is nice as I have seen some from other companies where they could not match it. That is really the only negative thing that I have to say about this guard. If I were to rate this guard I would give it a nine out of ten on fit and comfort and eight out of ten just based purely on the visual part of it. Now lets say you have a whole fight team that is interested or maybe you want another guard. Well BAMF offers discounts for just such an occasion. Be sure to contact them for details.

Overall I can recommend this mouthguard as it does have an excellent fit and I definitely feel like my mouth is protected when I have it on. I would say that if you are in the market for a new mouthguard be sure and check out www.BAMFmouthguards.com. They offer a great guard at a good price plus a warranty that is unmatched. Their guards start at around $65 and with so many custom options they can get to $150.

Notes

* This is directly from BAMF about adjustments. “Our dentists can make small adjustments to the mouthguard for comfort and fit if it’s too tight or rubs your mouth the wrong way in any areas. We take a lot of pride in our work and take our job to protect our customers very seriously. If you do not do the impression right, we will work with you to help you redo your impression since we will not make a mouthguard for someone that does not fit correctly or protect them as promised.”
