One of the first real looks at Sprawl's newest pair of shorts, the Fusion II Stretch Series

There are a lot of mma shorts out there, with all kinds of features and gimmicks. Everything from special clsoure systems to 4-way stretch material. With that said I have always been a fan of Sprawl, and they have now come out with their latest pair of shorts, the Fusion II Stretch Series. I will have a review coming up of these, but I wanted to give you a look at some of the things that have updated. Here is a list straight from Sprawl.

Our latest evolution is another step forward in design and performance. With a new distinctive look, the Fusion 2 delivers unmatched durability and features:

A wider waistband for increased comfort and stability.

A repositioned side slit to reduce ride up when working from the guard.

Heavier construction for a new standard of durability.

My initial impression of these shorts is they are amazing. Sprawl really took it to the next level. Be sure and check back for my full review but in the mean time enjoy these pictures.

Have all this extra cash left over after Christmas, and need to buy some new mma gear? Well what are you waiting for? Here is my guide to the best gear in the last year part 1.

Here it is almost the end of 2010 and I know what you are thinking. I have all this extra cash left over after Christmas and I need to buy some new mma gear. Well what are you waiting for? There is tons of great gear out there and I am going to take you through what I think is some of the best of the year. Whether you are thinking shorts or gloves, mouthguard or gi, or ever just a new hoodie I got you covered. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy a look at what I think are the best of 2010, and with 2011 coming up I can not wait to see what is just around the corner.

I think the best way to do this is I am going to present this in portions… first up shorts.

SHORTS

Every one of us that is a hardcore gear addict knows this is the staple of our addiction. You can never have too many pairs of mma shorts. I know that I can’t, and just continue to get them no matter how many pairs that I have. As new stuff comes out, I must have to have it. These are just a couple examples of the shorts that I have reviewed that I think are ones that you should not live without.

Sprawl Fusion-S Shorts

These are really some of the best shorts out on the market. With almost every key feature combined into one short this is surely not a pair that you will want to pass up.

That's right! Another pair of shorts from Hayabusa. This time I look at their Shiai Competition Shorts, read the full review to see what I think.

First Impression- I have tried out many white shorts and still have yet to find a pair that does not become transparent during and after and intense workout. This particular pair of shorts seems to be thicker than than other shorts that I have tried so hopefully it can pass the test. Looking forward to seeing what these can do.

Construction- Like other products that I have tried from Hayabusa the construction of these shorts is excellent. There was not loose stitching and like I have previously mentioned the material of the shorts themselves is thick and very durable. The logos on these shorts are sublaminated so they will stand up to all of your toughest training. For those of you who have read some of my previous articles you know that I prefer shorts that do not have a split seam. For me it is something that is just not necessary as I have rarely had that effect and sort of performance or technique. Well these shorts do have a spilt seam, and I would say one that is slightly longer than most. They also feature a stretch panel Now, for one of my favorite things about these shorts, the closure system. The closure system on these is unlike any other system out there. Yes, it has standard hook and loop style Velcro, but that is where any kind of similarities end. It features a very different kind of drawstring system which allows for the tightest fit possible and if that is not enough it has a rubber running along the inside of the waist band which Hayabusa calls their “Guardlock” system. There is also some elastic in the waistband just to get that perfect fit. These shorts are made out of 100% polyester(90% Mechanical 10% Performance)and are manufactured in Taiwan.

Fit- This where we get to see if all those features these shorts have actually work. I am here to tell you that they do. I ordered a 32 in these shorts and that was prefect for me. With so much room for adjustment it was hard to make these fit wrong. The length of them is mid to just below the knee. The material of the shorts feels nice, but they do feel a little heavier than other shorts. The waistband system works just as advertised. Once you have these shorts on there is no way that they are coming off. The only real negative thing that I can say about the fit is that the drawstring almost always get tangled up in the Velcro, and it does pull the treads part.

Stand Up- For stand up these are easily in my top 3 favorites to use. They feel extremely comfortable while doing any sort of stand up. I did not have any problems with any sort of technique and did not feel restricted at all. While the split seam could be helpful for some, for me it was not necessary. One thing that really bothers me about mma shorts in general is a lot of them require adjustments in between rounds. These are one of the only pairs I have ever used that required ZERO adjustments not only between rounds, but for my entire workouts. With the way the closure system works and the “guardlock” once these shorts are tied, they are not moving. Keep in mind that you can feel these shorts on you as they are heavier than others, but once you get going it is not as noticeable. These do however absorb a fair of amount of sweat so they can take a little while to dry out.

Ground- When using these for ground I would rate this as good. It is not that they do anything wrong, I just think it might be because they are so good during stand up that its hard to match that performance. Once again they stay very tight around the waist and there is no shifting or rid up from them. Since the material is thicker there is less riding up on the legs, but because the split seams are longer, when they do rid up it is very noticeable. These shorts are not restricting at all and found them to be very comfortable.

Pros-

*Excellent construction

*Great closure system

*Sublaminated logos

Oh, I almost forgot, you are probably wondering how they did with them being white and if they became transparent. Well I can report that these are the best shorts that I have test when it comes to that. While they still did absorb a lot of sweat, they are much less transparent then any other short that I have used. With that in mind, if you are looking for a new pair of shorts, then please take a look at the Hayabusa White Shiai Fight Shorts. They are also available in black and gray if white is not your color. I really rate these as one of the best shorts I have ever trained in. They can be purchased for right around $65.

Per manufacturer-

The Elite Series shorts feature a two-way stretch polyester microfiber body and a fully sublimated contiguous expansion panel that runs vertically up the sides of each leg and laterally across the rear for maximum flexibility and performance.

They also include an extended expansion panel that extends vertically along the entire length of each inseam.

First Impression- I really liked the way that these shorts looked when I got them out of the bag they came in. They felt different than other Clinch Gear shorts that I have purchased, lighter but sturdier. I could not wait to try them out and get some workouts in.

Construction- Like everything that Clinch Gear makes these shorts are very well constructed. There were no loose threads, and everything is either double or triple stitched. They are made out of 100% polyester. The fabric of these is shorts is a two-way stretch and there is a stretch panel that runs not only along the sides, but along the back of the shorts. There is also another stretch panel on the inseam of these shorts. The closure system on these is your standard over the top style closure system, but does not feature a drawstring. The logo on the closure system is embroidered and all the rest of the logos are sublimated. These are the best quality shorts I have seen out of Clinch Gear. These shorts are manufactured in Mexico.

Fit- The most important thing that I can say about Clinch Gear is make sure that you get the correct size. With there being no drawstring, there is not a lot of room for adjustment. For me the bad part about that is I am right between a 28 and a 30. I can get into a 28, but it is very tight around my waist. I can easily fit into a 30 and is very comfortable, but during intense sparring or muay thai workouts they did shift around my waist. The closure system does a good job at keeping the shorts closed, and there is no exposed Velcro. The length of these shorts falls just above my knee. The shorts are extremely comfortable to the point where I find myself wearing them around the house. They dry out very quickly and feel extremely light. If only these had some sort of rubber strip inside the waistband, they would be one of the best pair of shorts I have ever reviewed. However they are still a very good pair of shorts.

Stand Up- I got mixed results with these shorts while doing stand up. I would have some workouts and they would stay very snug and not move around my waist, then I would have other workouts where all it would take was a couple rounds on the bag and they would be shifting around my waist. I did try two different sizes and noticed the most shifting with the size 30, but they are also the more comfortable pair over the size 28. I did not have any kind of problem with any sort of technique, and found these shorts to be one of the more comfortable pairs of shorts I have ever worn. They did a good job at feeling light weight, even during some very tough workouts. They also would dry very fast.

Ground- Normally when a pair of shorts shifts around my waist during stand up, it is even worse when doing ground work. Well, with these shorts that is not the case. They actually stayed snug around my waist. The stretch panels in these shorts provide for a huge range of mobility. The feel very comfortable on do not ride up while having some one in my guard. The length of them is perfect, long enough to be comfortable, but still short enough so that you do not get a knee snuck in them. There are no split seams in these but they are really not needed.

Pro-

*Fantastic Construction

*Comfort

*Sublimated Logos

Cons-

*No Drawstring for adjustability

*Hopefully you are not in between sizes

Overall- If I could design a pair of shorts these are very close to what I would come up with. The design is great and the construction is top notch. The only thing that keeps them from being the best shorts around in my opinion is that there is not any room for adjustment. WIth me I fit between sizes, so that made if hard. Oh side note of just something that I noticed is that these shorts fit a little bigger than their Pro series shorts. If you are looking for a new pair of shorts, make sure you look at these. They really are a pair of shorts that everyone should try out. They can be purchase for right around $60.

Looking at another item from Ring to Cage. This time its their Deluxe Board Shorts. Read the full review to check them out.

Per Manufacturer-

*Loose fit grappling short made from of polyester fabric.
*Super stretch inseam and side panels for ultimate flexibility.
*Great for training and competition.
*Shorts also include bi-directional adjustable waistband system with internal drawstring.
*Full cut to accommodate protective cup, with 6″ split outseams.
*Adjustable waistband design, and internal drawstring that provides secure fit, reducing shifting during ground fighting.

First Impression- I pulled these out the box and I really liked the way they looked. They felt nice and I could not wait to work out in them.

Construction- The construction of these shorts is good. They have very few loose threads, and are double and triple stitched at all of the stress points. The closure system on this particular pair of shorts is a standard hook and loop style system, but they do have an elastic waistband for plenty of adjustability. They have stretch panels on both the inseam and the outside of the legs to provide extra range of motion. All of the logos are embroidered and they are kept to a minimum leaving the shorts with a nice clean look. The colors of these shorts are done well, while the shorts themselves are made of 100% polyester. There is a drawstring which should provide a tight fit, and they have a split seam on the outside of each leg. They are made in Pakistan.

Fit- With shorts that have an elastic waistband I am not too worried about the waist is going to fit because there is plenty of room for adjustment so I got these in a size 30- they fit perfectly. Now these shorts are on the shorter side of most shorts falling just around mid thigh level. These shorts feel very light weight, and the waistband closes up with a nice and tight fit. One thing I noticed about the closure system of the shorts is that the ruff side of the Velcro faces toward you so sometimes I found that it would irritate my stomach area. I could easily wear a cup with these(which should be a must anyway)and the lining of these shorts on the inside is very soft.

Stand Up- While doing stand up these shorts felt excellent. They almost had the feeling of muay thai type shorts. I have no problem with any sort of technique. The waistband stays very snug and there was no shifting or riding up. The split seams provided a huge range of motion in combination with the fact that the legs are a little shorter than most shorts. These shorts also stayed dry during training and did not soak up much sweat which kept them feeling light in weight. Like I mentioned before the only real problem I had with these is the Velcro did scratch up my stomach, so either a revision where the ruff Velcro faces outward or they had a fold over the top style closure system would correct this problem.

Ground- When doing ground work such as submission wrestling I am just, “okay” with these shorts. When doing stand up the shortness of these shorts was a benefit, well on the ground I did not find the same result. The legs would ride up a lot, of course if I was in a top position it was not that bad. However if I was on my back, such as having someone in my guard these shorts would ride up to the point where it looked like all I was wear was the compression shorts that I had on underneath them. On a positive note the waistband is great. It stays very tight and these was no shifting from side to side. The range of motion in these is great, had no problems with any technique such as rubber guard or any sort of sweeps.

Pros-

*Construction

*Waistband

*Muay thai feel for stand up

Cons-

*Ruff side of Velcro faces toward you

*Short length of legs causes them to ride up

Overall- These are a pretty good pair of shorts. Their construction is great and the waistband is a prime example of what a waistband should be like. However there are enough small problems to keep them out of the elite category. If these things got fixed they could move to the highly recommended tier, but for not all I can do is just recommend them. If you are looking for a middle of the road pair of shorts that still offer plenty of features then take a look at these. They can be purchased for right around $50.

Here we have Cageside MMA's Diablo shorts. Are they just another pair of shorts, or a pair you need to add to your collection? Read my full review to find out.

Per Manufacturer-

*100% Sueded Microfiber Polyester (This is a super light, yet very strong material that is very comfortable)
*Fitted waistband (Non-elastic)in the front, elastic waist band in the back. This ensures a perfect fit even while cutting weight.
*Inner drawstring
*Velcro fly and closure system
*Flex panels in the crotch
*Split seams (4 inch split)
*Embroidered logos
*Inner pocket for mouthguard

First Impression- I pulled these out of the bag and loved how bright and vibrant the red color of the shorts is. The quality was there too, but I was a little worried about the sizing as it was suggested that I get a size 28. I guess we will see.

Construction- The construction of these shorts is top notch. All the stitching is very well done, and there is both double and triple stitching in all the right places. The logos are all embroidered. These shorts have a standard style of hook and loop closure system. These shorts also have a flex panel in the crotch. One thing that is very interesting about these shorts is waist. Along the front they have a fitted style waistband, but then along the back it is made out of elastic. This makes for some adjustability in the fit, but I will get into that more a little later. These shorts are manufactured in Pakistan and are made out of 100% polyester.

Fit- It was recommended to me by Cageside to get these shorts in a 28 based on the size of other shorts that I wear. I was little worried as I have never worn a 28 in any other pair of shorts. Well let me tell you, it fit perfectly, so that is something to keep in mind when ordering these shorts. These shorts fall just above the knee. Now onto a very cool feature of these shorts. From the front they look like they are going to be fitted but in the back they have elastic which allows for quite a bit of adjustability. These shorts also feature small 4 inch spilt seam. Once tied these shorts feel nice and snug around my waist, and the material of them keeps them light in weight. One of the only ways I think that I would improve upon these shorts is to give them an over the top type closure system as that just seems to be more secure, plus keeps the Velcro away from your body.

Stand Up- While using these shorts for stand up training they worked excellent. They stayed tight around my waist with no shifting or bunching. With the stretch panel and the split seam they provided plenty of range of motion. These shorts did not soak up much sweat which was nice and kept them nice and light feeling. I did not have any sort of problem with doing any sort of technique. Really the only negative thing about these shorts while doing stand up was occasionally the Velcro would scratch my stomach even though the rough side is facing out. I think the added feature of the elastic helps keep these shorts from shifting even when not tied all that tight.

Ground- As you can see with my rating I liked these shorts on the ground just not as much as I liked them for stand up. They feel great on the ground. I did not experience any shifting around my waist, but the legs rode up some just like most loose fitting shorts do. The have a very large range of motion, and I did not have issues with performing any techniques. These shorts are actually are very comfortable pair of shorts to wear on the ground, just like them better for stand up. Once again really the only negative thing I can say about them is the Velcro scratching my stomach.

Pros-

*Great Construction

*Embroidered Logos

*Very Comfortable

Cons-

*Velcro Scratches

*Sizing can be tricky

Overall- These are a great pair of shorts that you are not going to see everywhere. With only a few minor issues like Velcro scratching and sizing these are a hard pair of shorts not to recommend. Be sure just to ask Cageside about sizing, their customer service is great and so are there shorts. These are actually one of my favorite pairs of shorts to train in. If you are in the market for a new pair of shorts, then for sure take a look at these. With a price right around $40 these are hard to pass up.

(Highly Recommended)

I am always looking for new shorts. Well here is the original vale tudo shorts from Badboy. Read the full review to see if these are a must have.

Per Manufacturer-

The original Bad Boy “Vale Tudo” Shorts are made in Brazil by the same factory that has been making Bad Boy “Vale Tudo” Shorts since 1994. These shorts are the same fabric (also made in Brazil), structure, and fit that have made the Bad Boy “Vale Tudo” Shorts an icon of Mixed Martial Arts.

Each short is fully lined for your comfort and incorporates a drawstring for perfect fit. Often imitated and never duplicated, these shorts remain one of the most sought-after Bad Boy products around the world. 100% Polyamide.

First Impression- When I got these shorts I new that I was going to like them. They felt different then other vale tudo shorts that I had tired and could not wait to put them on and start getting the workouts in.

Construction- The construction of these shorts is absolutely excellent. When I pulled them out of the plastic bag that they I could tell these were going to be great quality shorts. They are thicker than most vale tudo shorts, but yet are still very stretchy. They did not have any loose threads, and are manufactured in Brazil. On the shorts you can see they have screen printed logos, but the screen printing seems extremely durable. I do not foresee it cracking or peeling. Now one thing that is very important about these shorts is you must follow the washing instructions that come with the shorts. The lining on the inside of these shorts is very comfortable. The shorts themselves are made out of 92% Polyamide and 8% spandex, although the website says 100% Polyamide, but I would believe that the tag is correct. The lining of the shorts however is made out of 100% polyamide. These shorts do feature a drawstring which is a nice way to keep them snug and the inner waist band is comfortable.

Fit- I got these shorts in a medium and the fit is right on the money. Now these are just a little bit shorter than other vale tudos I have used, but not my much being just around mid thigh level. The fit nice and tight like you would expect vale tudo shorts to fit. The drawstring comes in handy for keeping the shorts nice and tight around your waist. If you are in doubt about sizing I would go with your actual waist sizing as they are pretty true to size. The lining inside the shorts feels nice and comfortable. I did not have any kind of problems wearing these with a cup, as they actually do an excellent job at keeping one in place. These are the type of shorts that you forget you are wearing.

Stand Up- These shorts work great for stand up. They have plenty of stretch. I did not have any problems with any technique. Most of the time I did not even realize I was wearing them . They are a very comfortable pair of shorts. They range of motion on them is great. They stayed very snug around my waist. The legs did ride up a very little, but there was no shifting around the waist at all.

Ground- On the ground these work very well. Yes it does feel like you are rolling around in your underwear, but hey these are vale tudo shorts. They stayed tight and had very little shifting around the waist. They did ride up in the legs some, but not enough to be annoying. As always with vale tudos it is a little weird to have someone in your guard but over time you get use to it. No problems doing an sort of techniques at all. Very comfortable on the ground.

Pros-

*Well Made

*Durability

*Great Fit

Cons-

*Not for Everyone

*Screen Printed Logos

Overall- What can I say about these shorts? I really could not find a whole lot wrong with them. If you can pull off wearing vale tudo shorts then I highly recommend picking these ones up. With the amazing quality and great fit, these are a hard pair of shorts to pass up. If you are in the market for vale tudo shorts make sure to check these out. They retail for right around $50.

This time I take a look at Revgear's Spartan Pro High Performance Fight Shorts. Read the full review to see what I think.

Per Manufacturer-

Revgear Spartan Pro High Performance Fight Shorts. The most technical fight short on the market!

*High performance two way stretch fabric body with four way stretch gusset.
*5″ side slit with reinforced stress points for high kicking.

*Antimicrobial treated and water repellent.

*Hook and loop enclosure with drawstring.

First Impression- When I first saw these I have to say the styling was kind of bland, but they still looked like high quality shorts. I have never used a Revgear pair of shorts before so did not really know what to expect.

Construction- The construction of these shorts is top notch. Very few loose threads, and everything is either double or triple stitched. These shorts have a fairly standard hook and loop closure system with a drawstring. They have a fitted waist which sometimes I find to be annoying, but not too bad on this pair. The shorts are made in China. There are quite a few logos on these shorts as you can see. Some are embroidered and some are screen printed on the shorts. They have a small split seam and have stretch panel in the inside of the leg. The material itself is a 2 ways stretch and the shorts are made 100% out of polyester. They also have a small pocket on the inside of the waistband.

Fit- For these shorts I first picked up a 32. While the fit was good I felt like I might be better off getting a 30. Well that was what I ended up doing and the 30 fit perfectly. Once the closure system was fastened and the drawstring was tied these shorts fit nice and tight on my waist. There was very little shifting or riding up. These shorts are mid length and go just past the top of my knee. These shorts feel a little heavier than some, but it also makes them feel very durable. They fit of these short is very good just make sure that you have the right size, and I would say when in doubt go a size smaller than normal. Something that I did really like about them is they place the fold over part of the closure system farther down. I liked this because sometimes the velcro can rub against my stomach and cause irritation and with this pair this is not an issue.

Stand Up- When I used these for any sort of stand up they worked great. They stayed snug around my waist, without any ride up. The stretch panel allowed them to have plenty of range of motion. The split seam in these is smaller than most shorts so I really did not feel like it made any difference. These shorts also did not shift much around my waist which was a surprise to me as most shorts that have a fitted waistband tend to shift. The length of these shorts is just right and did not get in the way or cause any sort of binding up. I had no trouble with any sort of technique in these shorts.

Ground- On the ground these shorts work well. They are very comfortable. I did not have any problems with performing any sort of technique. There was more shifting here than there was when using them for stand up but nothing too bad. They did still manage to stay fairly snug around my waist. The legs of them also had a tendency to ride up while on my back. Had plenty of range of motion, and did not bind up when on my back.

Pros-

*Construction

*Snug Fit once you get the correct size

Cons-

*Sizing

*Bland Styling

Overall- These are a good pair of shorts. They do exactly what they are suppose to do. If you like the styling and get the sizing down these may be the shorts for you. These are shorts that I can recommend especially if you are looking for a pair not everyone has. You can pick them up for right around $50. While they are not my favorite shorts, they will remain in my rotation.

Here I take a look at Inspirit's Spec 1 Model. These are a very unique pair of shorts. Read the full review to find out why.

Per Manufacturer-

To meet the constantly evolving needs of INSPIRIT fighters and customers, we have improved our signature SPEC series with improvements to fabric, overall fit and functionality, such as improved velcro strap closures. The exclusive mesh liner, on the inside of the shorts, prevents sticking, fading of color from sweat, and improves hygiene. The overall shape of the shorts is kept intact even after hard practices. The previously printed logo is now embroidered to add a premium look.

First Impression- When I first got these shorts I was very impressed by the way that these shorts looked. I did however notice that there was no spilt seam or stretch panel so I hope these shorts provide plenty of mobility.

Construction- The construction of these shorts is excellent. All of the stitching is top notch, and the logos are very well placed. Most of the logos are embroidered, there are a few on the sides that are screen printed on. These shorts have an interior lining to them similar to what swim shorts or basketball shorts have. The closure system of these shorts is very unique. It has elements of a standard hook and loop but also has a small tab that the drawstring runs through ensuring that these will not come loose. They also have metal eyelets around the holes that the drawstring comes out of.The waistband is a mix of both fixed and elastic . The shorts are manufactured in .

Fit- I got these shorts in a . I was a little worried looking at them as they looked small but ended up fitting perfectly. The help of the elastic waistband makes these shorts have just enough adjust ability. They also have a drawstring. These shorts are medium in length and fall just about knee level. Once the closure system in secured these shorts fit very snug. I have no doubt that while training that these shorts are going to stay snug around my waist. They are a little tighter in the legs then most shorts but we will see if that makes a difference when training.

Stand Up- These shorts actually worked very well for the stand up. They did not shift around my waist at all. There was a little bit of the legs riding up, but that is to be expected with no spilt seam or stretch panel. I did not have any problems doing any sort of technique. I was worried that the mesh on the inside of the shorts might be annoying but it was not at all. I did not even notice it was there.

Ground- On the ground these shorts worked okay. While they stayed nice and snug around my waist they did ride up on my legs. Now with the lack of a split seam or stretch panel, these shorts seemed a little tight. They did not prevent me from performing any certain moves, but I could feel that they were there. Sometimes they felt very tight on my legs. Still did not find the mesh to be annoying, and actually felt as if it kept the shorts dry.

Pros-

*Construction

*Most logos embroidered

*Closure System

Cons-

*Lack of Split Seam or Stretch Panel

*Mesh could be bothersome(not me)

Overall- I really liked these shorts. While they have some minor flaws, these shorts work well at what they do. On the plus side you could wear these shorts for other activities such as weight lifting or even just going for a run. The positives definitely out weigh the negatives so I can recommend these shorts. If you are in the market for a pair of shorts that are high quality and can be used just about anywhere, take a look at these.
