Have all this extra cash left over after Christmas, and need to buy some new mma gear? Well what are you waiting for? Here is my guide to the best gear in the last year part 1.

Here it is almost the end of 2010 and I know what you are thinking. I have all this extra cash left over after Christmas and I need to buy some new mma gear. Well what are you waiting for? There is tons of great gear out there and I am going to take you through what I think is some of the best of the year. Whether you are thinking shorts or gloves, mouthguard or gi, or ever just a new hoodie I got you covered. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy a look at what I think are the best of 2010, and with 2011 coming up I can not wait to see what is just around the corner.

I think the best way to do this is I am going to present this in portions… first up shorts.

SHORTS

Every one of us that is a hardcore gear addict knows this is the staple of our addiction. You can never have too many pairs of mma shorts. I know that I can’t, and just continue to get them no matter how many pairs that I have. As new stuff comes out, I must have to have it. These are just a couple examples of the shorts that I have reviewed that I think are ones that you should not live without.

Sprawl Fusion-S Shorts

These are really some of the best shorts out on the market. With almost every key feature combined into one short this is surely not a pair that you will want to pass up.

Here a look at a Primetime's shin pads. Read the full review to see how they stack up.

Per Manufacturer-

Features Super Shock Absorbing COMBAT PAD Padding – One of a kind protection

Combat Pad is molded to contour around the shin-neoprene sets and maintains fit-no turning or shifting

High Quality Leather is durable to last longer/look good

Neoprene is perfect thickness to maintain stability – no turning or shifting

Great Coverage for Shin and Instep-train hard without worry

First Impression- The quality of these looked excellent like everything else from Primetime and they did not look bulky like some other pads that I have used. I could not wait to hit the gym with them.

Construction- These shin pads have excellent construction. There are absolutely no loose threads. The leather on the front of them is thick, and has a very durable feel. The padding on both the shin and the instep is thick and stiff so it should provide great shock absorption. It has neoprene lining on the back of the shin pads which is has a great feel to it and is thick enough that I do not think it will tear. The closure system on these is on the top just behind the knee and it a hook and loop style. These guards are manufactured in. The logos on the back of pads are screen printed on while they have a patch on the front.

Fit- The fit of these shin pads is perfect. I got a small which was the correct size. These should fit fairly tight on you, and there are four different sizes so you should be able to find one that fits correctly. When in doubt just ask Primetime I am sure they can help out. They stay very secure against my legs due to the neoprene backing. I have used other pads in the past that just have two point of connection and they just do not stay as tight as these. Now for the bad part of them being so tight. They are very very hard to take off. While being very tight during training is a huge plus, being very tight when trying to get them off is a negative. I had to pull as hard as I could to get a little pulled off, then I had to stand on the end with one foot and pull my leg out. This is just a minor negative compared to everything else these pads have to offer but I did feel like it needed to be mentioned. These are a long pair of shin pads that cover up almost all of the top of the foot and go all the way up to the back of the knee. The hook and loop style closure system in just behind the back of the knee and can be easily adjusted.

Training- I have used several types of shin pads and these are my favorites. They stay perfectly tight no matter what type of training you are doing. While doing stand up whether it was hitting the heavy bag or sparring these stayed snug. They did not shift or ride up. I would do some conditioning stations that would require all different types of training which included rounds of sparring and these pads did not move. They have plenty of padding that is not too thick or stiff but still absorb enough shock. Even on the ground these did not move. Anything from having people in my guard to having some sort of top control and everything in between these remained tight. I did not have to make adjustments to them like other pads I have used. I thought that the Velcro that is on the closure system might irritate the back of my leg, but the way that it is setup it did not bother me at all.

Pros-

*Great Construction

*Perfect Fit

*Stay snug through training

Cons-

*Very hard to take off

*Screen Printed logos on the back

Overall- I do not think that I could be happier with a pair of shin pads as I am with these. Well maybe if I could get them off a little easier, but other than that these are a great product. If you are looking at getting a new pair a shin guards and want something that is meant for not only stand up but grappling too take a look at these. Oh and right now they are on sale. They a normally right around $50 but you can get them now for $40.

First Impression- I was very interested to try these shorts as they have a very light feel to them. They did have quite a few logos on them but everything looked to be high quality. Material felt nice and overall looked like they were going to be a great pair of shorts.

These shorts are very well made. There was no loose stitching anywhere on these and they are both double and triple stitched where they need to be. They are made in India. Almost all of the logos are embroidered except the ones on the inner flex panel which I will talk a little bit more about later. Keep in mind these shorts do have a lot of logos on them however the are the competition model so that was to be expected. This pair of shorts has 2 pockets where most just have one. They have your typical pocket that is located on the inside by the waistband but then they also have another pocket on the outside around the the thigh area. I found this helpful as I did not have to undo my shorts is I wanted to put something in a pocket.

These shorts have an elastic waistband which make them very adjustable. They have your standard hook and loop closure system with a drawstring. Something I really liked is the upgraded drawstring you get in these that does not stick to the Velcro. I do not know how many times I have had drawstrings get caught up in Velcro and either fray or come apart all together so this is a nice touch. These shorts have both an inner and outer stretch panel which is nice plus they have a split seam. However these shorts are very long. They are probably the longest pair I own going past my knees. The material feels very light weight and also durable. It has Other then the length of these shorts they have an excellent fit.

Stand up- While doing stand up training these shorts worked alright. I liked they way that they felt except for I could feel how long they were and found it sometimes to be distracting. However they offer a great range of motion and I have no problems doing any sort of techniques. They material dried fairly quick and the shorts never felt heavy or weighed down. These shorts did not shift or ride up on my waist and I never had to adjust them. I did not have any issues with the external pocket as I have with some pairs of short were either it comes open or rips. These are shorts I would recommend for stand up whether is be boxing or muay thai.

Ground- On the ground I am undecided on these shorts. While they provide and excellent rang of motion they bunch up in the legs. I think this is because on me they are so long and with a split seam it just causes them to bunch up. Around my waist though they did not move, stayed very snug and no shifting. Here is another thing about them on the ground. While you have someone in your guard the middle finger that is in the middle of the crotch becomes very visible. While to some this might seem like a cool thing I found that some people did not like it. I would say really only wear these for competition use.

Pros-

*Great Construction

*True to size

*Very Durable

Cons-

*Length

*Middle Finger logo may offend some

*Bunch up while on ground

Overall- I would say that if you are looking for a longer than average pair of fight shorts that are of great construction then these are for you. Minus the length issue the sizing of these is great and you really can’t go wrong with primetimes reputation of quality products. The more I used these shorts the more that I liked them. They are on sale right now for $24 which in my opinion is a steal.
