Here it is almost the end of 2010 and I know what you are thinking. I have all this extra cash left over after Christmas and I need to buy some new mma gear. Well what are you waiting for? There is tons of great gear out there and I am going to take you through what I think is some of the best of the year. Whether you are thinking shorts or gloves, mouthguard or gi, or ever just a new hoodie I got you covered. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy a look at what I think are the best of 2010, and with 2011 coming up I can not wait to see what is just around the corner.

I think the best way to do this is I am going to present this in portions… first up shorts.

SHORTS

Every one of us that is a hardcore gear addict knows this is the staple of our addiction. You can never have too many pairs of mma shorts. I know that I can’t, and just continue to get them no matter how many pairs that I have. As new stuff comes out, I must have to have it. These are just a couple examples of the shorts that I have reviewed that I think are ones that you should not live without.

Sprawl Fusion-S Shorts  

These are really some of the best shorts out on the market. With almost every key feature combined into one short this is surely not a pair that you will want to pass up.

Feel like there is something that I should add? Maybe you think your shorts should be here. Well do not feel bad. These are just the ones that I really feel like were ahead of the others. Plenty of other sections to go so don’t get your jockstrap in a bind just yet.

*100% Sueded Microfiber Polyester (This is a super light, yet very strong material that is very comfortable)
*Fitted waistband (Non-elastic)in the front, elastic waist band in the back. This ensures a perfect fit even while cutting weight.
*Inner drawstring
*Velcro fly and closure system
*Flex panels in the crotch
*Split seams (4 inch split)
*Embroidered logos
*Inner pocket for mouthguard

First Impression- I pulled these out of the bag and loved how bright and vibrant the red color of the shorts is. The quality was there too, but I was a little worried about the sizing as it was suggested that I get a size 28. I guess we will see.

Construction- The construction of these shorts is top notch. All the stitching is very well done, and there is both double and triple stitching in all the right places. The logos are all embroidered. These shorts have a standard style of hook and loop closure system. These shorts also have a flex panel in the crotch. One thing that is very interesting about these shorts is waist. Along the front they have a fitted style waistband, but then along the back it is made out of elastic. This makes for some adjustability in the fit, but I will get into that more a little later. These shorts are manufactured in Pakistan and are made out of 100% polyester.

Fit- It was recommended to me by Cageside to get these shorts in a 28 based on the size of other shorts that I wear. I was little worried as I have never worn a 28 in any other pair of shorts. Well let me tell you, it fit perfectly, so that is something to keep in mind when ordering these shorts. These shorts fall just above the knee. Now onto a very cool feature of these shorts. From the front they look like they are going to be fitted but in the back they have elastic which allows for quite a bit of adjustability. These shorts also feature small 4 inch spilt seam. Once tied these shorts feel nice and snug around my waist, and the material of them keeps them light in weight. One of the only ways I think that I would improve upon these shorts is to give them an over the top type closure system as that just seems to be more secure, plus keeps the Velcro away from your body.

Stand Up- While using these shorts for stand up training they worked excellent. They stayed tight around my waist with no shifting or bunching. With the stretch panel and the split seam they provided plenty of range of motion. These shorts did not soak up much sweat which was nice and kept them nice and light feeling. I did not have any sort of problem with doing any sort of technique. Really the only negative thing about these shorts while doing stand up was occasionally the Velcro would scratch my stomach even though the rough side is facing out. I think the added feature of the elastic helps keep these shorts from shifting even when not tied all that tight.

Ground- As you can see with my rating I liked these shorts on the ground just not as much as I liked them for stand up. They feel great on the ground. I did not experience any shifting around my waist, but the legs rode up some just like most loose fitting shorts do. The have a very large range of motion, and I did not have issues with performing any techniques. These shorts are actually are very comfortable pair of shorts to wear on the ground, just like them better for stand up. Once again really the only negative thing I can say about them is the Velcro scratching my stomach.

Overall- These are a great pair of shorts that you are not going to see everywhere. With only a few minor issues like Velcro scratching and sizing these are a hard pair of shorts not to recommend. Be sure just to ask Cageside about sizing, their customer service is great and so are there shorts. These are actually one of my favorite pairs of shorts to train in. If you are in the market for a new pair of shorts, then for sure take a look at these. With a price right around $40 these are hard to pass up.

First Impression- I pulled these gloves out of the box and was glad to see they were black as I did not know what ones Boomer had sent me. They looked great and I could not wait to try them on and get to cracking.

Fit and Finish- I liked the way these gloves fit. At http://www.cagesidemma.com/ they have a very helpful sizing chart so that you get the correct size and this definitely helped me. All of the stitching was tight and there was no loose of frayed stitching on the gloves. They have a great feel to them and on the inside of the glove the moisture wicking material feels very nice. They fit me just right except there is a small place on the outside palm of the glove that sticks out and does not cling to the hand. While it looks annoying I did not experience any problems with this but others have had fingers get stuck inside that little pocket. The logo across the knuckles I did not really care for but that was a minor thing and would not hinder me from using these gloves.

Construction- These gloves are 4oz gloves that are manufactured in Pakistan. The padding is nice and the leather has nice feel to it. The logo that is across the knuckles is screen printed on and seems durable. 

Stand up- These worked great at the stand up I did with them. I could use them for mitt work and light sparring but would not recommend them for bag work. They are not designed for bag work anyway so that was not a problem. I really liked these gloves as they felt very comfortable and did not slip out of place.

Ground- This is where these gloves shinned for me. I do a lot of no gi jiu jitsu and these gloves worked great for me. I was able to sink in all choked with out worrying about the gloves getting caught up or hindering what I was doing. When doing ground and pound drills these gloves worked excellent and a very flexible when pressing against the mat with you hand.
